Safe and sound: Bugno endorses the European Championships routes

09/04/2021

The former two-time World champion, now president of the professional cyclists association, was positively impressed by the routes of the Road European Championships: “The finish in the heart of Trento is really charming”

Gianni Bugno, the former two-time World Champion and today’s President of the CPA (Professional Cyclists Association) came to Trento on Thursday April 8th, following the invitation of UEC President Enrico Della Casa, in order to review the routes of the next European Championships, taking place from September 8th to 12th, 2021.

As professional riders’ representative, Bugno’s visit was mainly meant to assess the safety conditions on the courses, but he obviously expressed his expert opinion also on the technical side of it.

These routes look very technical to me, interesting for both the road and time trial races – explained Bugno -. The TT titles might be open to many riders, and suited also for non-specialists, while the road race will be technical and difficult to predict. It’s up and down all the way, and that’s going to be weary on the long run. From the safety side, the courses do not present any real issue: the road race finish in downtown Trento is beautiful and fascinating, and while the road narrows a bit in the finale, it is nothing that can’t be handled in full safety by taking the proper measures. These European Championships are born under a lucky star”.

Bugno did not feel like making predictions on the outcome, but recently the Men’s road races have been basically an all-Italian business: Matteo Trentin won in Scotland in 2018, followed by Elia Viviani in The Netherlands in 2019 and by Giacomo Nizzolo in France last year.

This UEC inspection in Trento was also the chance to meet the OC headed by the Trento, Monte Bondone and Valle dei Laghi Tourism Board in close collaboration with Trentino Marketing, the Municipality of Trento and Trento Eventi Sport, and have an overview on the preparation of the event. Following an extensive briefing, Enrico Della Casa expressed his high expectations for the event, in spite of some Covid-19 related restrictions: a topic that was carefully discussed in order to guarantee the best possible safety conditions for anybody involved.
